ADA Action Alert

Participants of the 2008 Public Policy Workshop visited Capitol Hill and asked their senators and representatives to support legislation to give Medicare the authority to expand MNT beyond diabetes and renal diseases.

Now, ADA is asking all members to contact their senators and representative to request support for legislation to expand MNT to cover pre-diabetes. Visit ADA's interactive Web site to create and email your letters. Go to www.eatright.org » and log in as a member. On the "Advocacy and the Profession" page, click "Take Action." It only takes a few minutes!

Farm Bill Update

As of the end of February, House and Senate agriculture committees are finalizing an agreement on a 10 year farm bill. Funding levels for food assistance programs and nutrition research are still being negotiated.

New WIC food packages!

WIC packages have been updated to include fresh, frozen, or canned fruits and vegetables; brown rice, bulgur, and other whole grains; and soy-based beverages and tofu as milk alternatives. States have the option of providing farmers' market vouchers for the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables. Milk, cheese, egg, and juice allowances have been reduced. Healthier Foods at School

Congress continues to debate S.771/H.R. 1363 "The Child Nutrition Promotion and School Lunch Protection Act" which seeks to eliminate foods of minimal nutritional value (junk foods) from schools.
